Inter and Milan ultras face trial next February

The organised supporter groups of Inter and AC Milan are heading to court following a major police operation on 30 September that exposed criminal activities linked to the clubs’ ultras.

Judge Domenico Santoro has ordered immediate trial proceedings for 18 individuals involved in the investigation into the fan organisations of the two Milanese clubs.

The first hearing is scheduled for 20 February 2025 at the Milan Court, targeting 16 individuals who were placed in custody and two others under house arrest since September. The case is poised to become a landmark trial in Italy, shedding light on the criminal networks connected to organised football fan groups and their alleged ties to the ’Ndrangheta, the infamous Calabrian mafia.

Key figures facing trial include Luca Lucci, leader of AC Milan’s Curva Sud, and Marco Ferdico, a prominent member of Inter’s Curva Nord. Ferdico is reportedly linked to Antonio Bellocco, a ’Ndrangheta member who was murdered in September. Andrea Beretta, Bellocco’s killer, is now cooperating with prosecutors, providing crucial insights into the inquiry.

The suspects are accused of criminal conspiracy and managing illegal activities connected to the San Siro stadium, ranging from ticket scalping and pressuring clubs for parking concessions to unauthorised merchandising and beverage sales within the stadium. Prosecutors have added mafia-related charges to the case, citing the use of intimidation and coercion.

This unprecedented trial highlights the intersection of organised crime and football in Italy, raising serious questions about the governance of supporter groups and their influence over the sport.
