Floriana have secured the signing of experienced Argentine centre-back Lucas Lopez ahead of the 2025–26 season. The 31-year-old joins from Marsaxlokk, where he tallied 29 appearances, scored four goals and supplied one assist in all competitions for the side that reached the UEFA Conference League first qualifying round
Lopez was instrumental in Marsaxlokk’s European campaign, featuring in their tie against Partizani of Albania. At Floriana, he will be expected to reinforce their backline as they prepare to go up against Welsh outfit Haverfordwest County AFC in the opening round of the Conference League.
Before his time in Malta, Lopez enjoyed spells with Argentine clubs Douglas Haig, Deportivo Maipú, Platense and Chilean side Rangers de Talca, giving him a wealth of South American experience.
The Greens have made this move as part of an ambitious summer transfer drive under new head coach Daniel Portela, who was appointed in early June. Portela brings extensive coaching experience from stints in Portugal, Africa and the Middle East, in a bid to restore Floriana’s status domestically and in Europe.
Floriana supporters will be hoping that Lopez’s leadership at centre-back and knack for set-piece threats translate into a strong defensive backbone, both at home and across Europe.
