The 2024/2025 SEAJET National SB20 Sailing League concluded earlier this month with a landmark achievement: Team Boost Stella Maris, an all-women crew, claimed the national title — a first in the league’s history.
Despite the cancellation of the final race weekend on June 14 and 15 due to insufficient wind conditions, Team Boost Stella Maris maintained their overall lead to secure the championship. Skippered by Gabriella Mifsud, the team comprises accomplished sailors Mattea Ciantar, Emilie Gregory, and Anna Basalkina — the latter an Olympic-class athlete who represented Russia at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and is a World Championship silver medalist.
Owned by Mario Debono, Team Boost Stella Maris delivered a series of technically sharp and consistently strong performances throughout the season, earning them the coveted league title. Their victory also qualifies them to represent Malta at the SB20 European Championships in Belgium in August 2025 — a campaign made possible through the support of SportMalta.
The University of Malta Sailing Team, led by Duncan Camilleri, secured second place overall, while Team Panda, helmed by Adrian Gauci Borda, finished third.
The SB20 class remains Malta’s largest one-design keelboat fleet, with competition based on pure performance — no handicaps, no substitutions. Each team competes with the same crew across an entire regatta weekend, ensuring level and exhilarating racing.
Currently featuring nine active teams, the fleet is expected to expand in the 2025/2026 season, which begins in October. With 15 SB20 boats in Malta and growing interest from local sailing clubs, the future of the class looks promising.
The season concluded with a celebration at the Royal Malta Yacht Club, where SB20 Malta Association President Steve Carter presented the trophies and extended thanks to main sponsors Dockshop and SEAJET, as well as race officers and volunteers whose dedication underpins the league’s success.
The league is organised under the auspices of the Malta Sailing Federation.
