François Letexier has been named the best referee in the world for 2024 by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), dethroning Poland’s Szymon Marciniak, who had held the title for the previous two years.
Despite the controversy surrounding his decision not to penalise the severe tackle by Singo on Gianluigi Donnarumma during the Monaco-PSG Ligue 1 match on 18 December, which left Donnarumma with a deep facial wound requiring 10 stitches, Letexier’s consistent performances throughout the year earned him the top spot.
In the rankings, Letexier received 129 points, comfortably ahead of second-placed Slovenian referee Vincic, who accumulated 86 points. Italy’s Daniele Orsato finished third with 74 points. Letexier’s rise to the top also marked the end of Marciniak’s two-year reign.
Letexier’s career includes several high-profile matches, including the final of Euro 2024 between Spain and England. He has officiated at prestigious events such as the 2020/2021 French Cup final between PSG and Monaco, the 2023/2024 UEFA Super Cup between Manchester City and Sevilla, and various Champions League and Nations League fixtures.
Despite the Monaco-PSG incident, Letexier’s previous performances were deemed outstanding, earning him the coveted title of best referee in the world.
