Sunderland claimed a memorable 1-0 win over Newcastle in the Tyne–Wear derby at the Stadium of Light, giving the home fans an early Christmas gift. Sunderland started the match strongly and showed more energy in the opening stages, but clear chances were few as the first half was tight and physical, with both sides cancelling each other out.
Newcastle had a few tough moments, including an injury to Dan Burn, while chances were limited, with long-range efforts failing to trouble either goalkeeper before the break.
The decisive moment came just after half-time. Within a minute of the restart, Sunderland took the lead when Nick Woltemade misjudged a header while trying to block a cross, and the ball flew past his own goalkeeper and into the net. Newcastle reacted by making several substitutions to add more attacking threat and began to push forward, forcing Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs into a couple of saves from distance. At the other end, Sunderland went close to a second goal, but Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale kept his side in the game.
Despite late pressure from Newcastle, Sunderland stayed organised and defended bravely until the final whistle. The victory extended Sunderland’s unbeaten league run against their rivals and moved them up to seventh place in the Premier League, four points clear of Newcastle.
