Aston Villa continued their excellent home form with a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, making it 11 home victories in a row in all competitions for the first time since 1914. John McGinn scored twice in the Premier League to help Unai Emery’s side secure the win.
Villa started strongly and almost scored inside the first two minutes, but Forest goalkeeper John Victor made a fine save from Ollie Watkins. Villa controlled most of the first half and kept Forest under pressure. Their patience paid off just before half-time when Watkins scored from outside the box to give the hosts the lead.
Villa doubled their advantage early in the second half. McGinn got on the end of a low cross from Matty Cash and finished first time. Forest pulled a goal back around the hour mark when Morgan Gibbs-White ran through and calmly scored past Emiliano Martínez.
However, Villa quickly restored their two-goal lead. Forest goalkeeper Victor rushed out of his goal, allowing McGinn to go past him and score his second of the match into an empty net. The goalkeeper was later forced off with an injury.
Forest tried to respond, but Martínez made sure there was no comeback. The win lifts Aston Villa into second place in the table, three points behind the league leaders. For Nottingham Forest, it was their fourth straight league defeat, leaving them just four points above the relegation zone.
