Tottenham Hotspur continued their strong record against Leeds United with a 2-1 Premier League win at Elland Road, making it six wins in their last seven meetings.
Despite Storm Amy causing chaos across the UK, it was Leeds who came out flying in the first 10 minutes. Sean Longstaff’s wind-assisted free-kick almost caught Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario off guard, but Joe Rodon saved the day by heading the ball onto the post.
Tottenham soon took control. Mathys Tel, a surprise name in the starting line-up, silenced critics when his shot deflected off Pascal Struijk and beat Karl Darlow to put Spurs ahead.
Leeds almost equalised straight away after Rodrigo Bentancur lost the ball near his goal, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a golden chance, firing wide. Moments later, Mohammed Kudus missed a great opportunity for Spurs, and they paid the price when Brenden Aaronson’s shot was fumbled by Vicario, falling kindly to Noah Okafor, who scored from close range.
Right before half-time, Tel nearly scored again with a header that hit the bar. Soon after the break, Calvert-Lewin forced a strong save from Vicario. That stop became even more important when, just before the hour mark, Kudus fired Spurs back in front with a powerful shot from outside the box that skipped off the wet pitch and past Darlow.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke brought on more attackers in search of an equaliser, but Spurs held firm. It was Tottenham’s first Premier League win since early September, and they now move up to second in the table, at least until the rest of today’s matches are played. They’re chasing only their second top-four finish in the past seven seasons.
