Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed after Brennan Johnson scored twice to help Tottenham Hotspur to a 3-1 win in North London.
Before kick-off, Spurs fans protested against club chairman Daniel Levy, but on the pitch, the home side quickly got to work. Southampton, already on the brink after Wolves’ win the day before, started nervously. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made an early save from Cristian Romero’s header, and Pedro Porro then blocked Kamaldeen Sulemana’s close-range effort, which hit the post.
That missed chance proved costly, as Brennan Johnson gave Spurs the lead in the 13th minute with a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner after a good assist from Djed Spence. Lucas Bergvall thought he had added a second, but his goal was ruled out for offside after a long VAR check. Johnson did, however, score again just before half-time, calmly finishing from James Maddison’s looping header.
With a two-goal lead at the break, Spurs eased off in the second half, likely saving energy for their Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt. They still looked dangerous, with Dominic Solanke forcing Ramsdale into a full-stretch save.
Southampton pulled one back through Mateus Fernandes, who controlled the ball well before firing past Vicario. But any hopes of a comeback were ended in stoppage time when Mathys Tel scored from the penalty spot after Welington gave away a soft foul in the box.
The defeat was Southampton’s sixth in their last seven league games, confirming their drop and leaving them needing one more point to avoid matching the lowest-ever Premier League points total. The Saints become the first side in Premier League history to go down with seven matches left to play, sitting on just 10 points from 31 games.
