Arsenal hand Postecoglou defeat in first game in charge

Arsenal claimed their third straight Premier League win at home with a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. It’s the first time they’ve won three in a row at the Emirates since August 2024.

This was the first match in charge for new Forest manager Ange Postecoglou, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo during the international break. With just three wins in their last eleven league games, Forest came into the match low on confidence and struggled to adapt to Postecoglou’s different playing style.

Arsenal dominated the first half in terms of possession, but clear chances were rare. Both teams lost key players to injury in the first half, Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard and Forest defender Murillo had to come off. The breakthrough finally came when Martín Zubimendi scored a brilliant volley just before half-time. It was his first goal for Arsenal and also the first time he had scored from outside the penalty area in his league career.

Arsenal doubled their lead within a minute of the second half starting. Viktor Gyökeres, signed in the summer, finished off a cross from Eberechi Eze from close range. Forest nearly pulled one back shortly after when a cross by Dan Ndoye deflected off Chris Wood and nearly went in, but David Raya made a smart save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar. Gyökeres then hit the post for Arsenal not long after.

After that, Forest seemed to lose belief. Even after making changes and bringing on Ryan Yates and James McAtee, they couldn’t trouble Arsenal. Zubimendi scored again late on with a header, sealing a comfortable win.

It was an ideal bounce-back performance for Arsenal after their defeat to Liverpool. For Forest, it’s another 3-0 loss, and Postecoglou now faces a big task to lift the team and stop this poor run from continuing.
