João Pedro scored twice as Chelsea secured a 3-2 victory over SSC Napoli to confirm their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The result ended Napoli’s 25-game unbeaten home run in all competitions, with the Italian side finishing outside the top 24.
Chelsea entered the match already assured of progression from the group stage but were occupying the eighth and final automatic qualification spot. Napoli, meanwhile, had dropped points against 10-man Copenhagen on Matchday 7, leaving them outside the top eight on goal difference.
The match opened quietly, but Napoli’s Juan Jesus handled the ball inside the box following a Reece James free-kick. Enzo Fernández converted the resulting penalty, his fifth of the season, to give Chelsea an early lead.
Napoli responded strongly, with Mathías Olivera heavily involved in a period of sustained pressure. Antonio Vergara produced a Maradona-style turn to score his first senior goal, and shortly before half-time, Rasmus Højlund capitalised on Olivera’s low cross to put the home side ahead 2-1.
Chelsea adjusted during the break, introducing Cole Palmer for Neto, and the second half initially saw fewer clear chances. Around the hour mark, Pedro struck a powerful effort into the top corner to level the score once again.
Chelsea then went ahead eight minutes from time, as Pedro completed a solo run and clinical finish to make it 3-2. Napoli pushed for an equaliser, with Romelu Lukaku making his 800th career appearance as a substitute, but Robert Sánchez denied him in stoppage time to preserve Chelsea’s victory.
Napoli’s defeat marked only their second loss in 21 UEFA Champions League home games (W12, D7) but left Antonio Conte’s side one point short of the top 24, eliminating them from the competition. Chelsea, meanwhile, will enter the last 16 and await the conclusion of the knockout play-off round to discover their next opponent.
