Spain is coming to this year’s European Basketball Championship as the current World Champion, but it is far from the narrowest circle of favorites, as coach Scariolo confirmed.
The coach Sergio Scariolo made a drastic change in the team, which he rejuvenated, so the final list includes only two players who are over 30 years old, which is not characteristic of the “Red Fury”.
The oldest is also the last member of the golden generation, Rudy Fernandez. The Real Madrid basketball player is the captain of Spain at this Eurobasket, and at the age of 37, he will make a greater contribution from the bench.
Another player with 30+ years is a well-known name to our basketball fans, Lorenzo Brown. The American who wore the Red Stars jersey received a Spanish passport and will be the first playmaker of this selection in the absence of Ricky Rubio and Sergio Llull.
It is interesting that Spain has a very small number of NBA players at this championship, only three. In addition to the Hernangomez brothers, there is also Houston’s new player, Usman Garuba, who is only 20 years old.
Spain has an incredible streak of winning medals at the European Championships. Since 1999, a medal has not been won only in 2005, when in the battle for the bronze medal in the Belgrade Arena, France won with 98:68. Since then, Spain has not left the podium, and the last championship title was won in 2015 when the legendary Pau Gasol led them to gold.
Spain starts its performance at this year’s Eurobasket today at 1:30 p.m. against Bulgaria.
