The Malta Basketball Association (MBA) Disciplinary Commissioner has ruled that Paul Ferrante, coach of Starlites JSD, will serve a one-month suspension from all MBA activities following an incident during the BOV Knock Out Final between Starlites JSD and Hibernians on March 2, 2025.
The case was reviewed by Disciplinary Commissioner Leonard Falzon and Secretary Joseph Muscat, who examined an official report, video evidence, and the relevant MBA Disciplinary Code. During the proceedings, Ferrante admitted to the misconduct and issued an apology for his actions. However, the severity of the offence warranted a strict disciplinary response. Ferrante tripped Hibernians Basketball player Derek Brown, who in turn went on a social media rant accusing the coach of match-fixing. Brown has also been suspended for a year for his comments.
As per the ruling, Ferrante has been found guilty of breaching MBA regulations and will be suspended for the entire month of March 2025 under Article DC-A5 vi of the MBA Disciplinary Code. His suspension prohibits him from participating in any MBA-related activities and bars him from entering or approaching any venue hosting an MBA event or competition during this period.
The decision is final and immediately enforceable, with any appeals required to follow the established MBA appeal procedures. The ruling serves as a strong reminder of the association’s commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding the integrity of Maltese basketball competitions.
