The 2025 Maltese basketball season got underway on September 28 with the Women’s Supercup clash between reigning champions Depiro and Knockout finalists Starlites.
The contest, overseen by referees Nestor Rincon, Bernard Vassallo and Andre Attard, provided an early highlight to the new campaign. Depiro fielded returning guard Sophie Abela and new signings Sommet (USA) and Lopez (Spain).
Starlites, on the other hand, lined up debutants Naudi, Dabic and Aburgin, together with their American addition Haverlock.
Both sides traded baskets in a lively opening, but Depiro edged the first quarter 22–18 and later stretched their lead to 41–32 at halftime, thanks to 15 points from Sonnier. Haverlock led the response for Starlites with 8 points but had 3 fouls early on.
In the third period, the Mtarfa side maintained control despite errors on both ends, taking a 56–48 lead into the final stretch. Depiro then tightened their grip in the closing minutes, punishing Starlites’ turnovers to cruise home with a 79–52 victory.
Star performer Sonnier registered 29 points, underlining her attacking prowess.
Following the final buzzer, the MBA President presented the silverware to Depiro, who proudly lifted their eighth Women’s Supercup title.
