Athletics Malta has announced the launch of the Malta National Road Running Series for 2024-2025, which has been expanded to include six races, with local clubs participating in organizing the events. This series will determine Malta’s individual and club champions in road running and will feature three 5km races and three 10km races held in various locations. The final race for each distance will also serve as the National Championship for that distance.
Building on the success of previous seasons, Athletics Malta is enhancing the league to six races, with three of them organized by local clubs. This initiative aims to elevate local road racing, as all events will require certification from World Athletics to be part of the Running League series.
This certification not only enhances the quality of the races but also ensures that any recorded times are valid for national and age category records, as well as for qualifying standards for international competitions.
Additionally, the Road Running League Series will provide opportunities for mass participation, allowing amateur and recreational runners to compete alongside seasoned athletes and earn participation medals in official competitions. This initiative will further promote and strengthen grassroots sports in Malta, fostering an inclusive yet competitive environment for all participants.
The league kicks off on October 27th with a 10km race hosted by Pembroke Athleta in Ta’ Qali. This will be followed by two 5km races organized by Evolve Endurance Club in Ta’ Xbiex and Rush AC in Safi on November 17th and December 1st, respectively.
The fourth race will take place on a 10km route in Ħal Far on January 19, 2025. The series will culminate on February 16th and March 16th, with Athletics Malta hosting the final two races in Ta’ Qali, both of which will also serve as the National 10km and 5km Championships.
Last season, Evolve Endurance Club excelled in both male and female categories, with Joelle Cortis and Dillon Cassar claiming the individual titles for Mellieħa AC.
