Alexander Zverev says his new, more aggressive playing style is starting to pay off as he chases his first Grand Slam title. The 28-year-old German, known for his powerful serve, used to play more cautiously in big matches, giving opponents chances to take control.
Now, Zverev is taking risks and is “willing to pay the price” for any mistakes as he adapts. After his 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-4 win over Brandon Nakashima in the third round at Indian Wells, he said:
“It’s exciting, but it will take time. Sometimes I go back to my old style, but in key moments, like today’s tiebreak, I played aggressively and won it myself.”
He admitted the new approach didn’t work in his recent loss to Miomir Kecmanovic in Acapulco but remains determined.
Zverev, a seven-time Masters 1000 champion, impressed with his fighting spirit in the five-hour Australian Open semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz in January. He has yet to win at Indian Wells but is confident on the hard courts in California.
Zverev will next face American Frances Tiafoe, who defeated Flavio Coloblli 6-1, 6-2.
