Seven-time major singles champion Venus Williams has been awarded a wildcard to compete at the 2026 Australian Open, making her the oldest woman ever to play at the season-opening Grand Slam. The American will return to the main draw at Melbourne Park for the first time since 2021.
Williams expressed her excitement about the opportunity, stating, “I am excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer. I have had so many incredible memories there and I am grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”
The 45-year-old is a five-time Wimbledon champion and a two-time US Open winner. She was also an Australian Open singles finalist in 2003 and 2017. Her participation will surpass Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she played in the first round in 2015, setting a new record for the oldest female competitor at the tournament.

In addition to her singles achievements, Williams has won four Australian Open doubles titles. She will begin her preparations at the Auckland Classic next week, followed by the Hobart International, ahead of the tournament scheduled from January 18 to February 1. Williams returned to the professional circuit at last year’s US Open after a 16-month break.
Fellow American and two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff praised Williams’ longevity, saying, “It is incredible to see her still turning up for tournaments. She is a legend of the sport, and it will be great to see her back in action. Her career longevity is remarkable, and she is someone I have always looked up to.”
Williams’ return to Melbourne Park highlights her continued impact on tennis and her enduring place among the sport’s most influential figures.
