Sunderland frustrate Manchester City as Premier League clash ends scoreless

Manchester City’s six match winning run in the Premier League came to an end after a goalless draw away to Sunderland, who extended their unbeaten home record in the 2025 to 2026 season. The result allowed Arsenal to open a four point gap at the top of the table heading into the first weekend of 2026.

City started with intent and thought they had taken an early lead when Bernardo Silva finished from close range after a headed assist by Erling Haaland. The goal was ruled out for a narrow offside decision following a review, with Silva judged to be marginally ahead at the decisive moment.

The visitors maintained sustained pressure on Sunderland’s defensive line during the opening stages, but the hosts responded with energy and organisation. Trai Hume and Enzo Le Fee were influential in midfield, helping Sunderland transition quickly on the counter attack and keep City’s defence under pressure. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was required to intervene when Brian Brobbey broke free and forced a strong save after overpowering Ruben Dias.

As the first half progressed, Sunderland’s intensity grew. Hume went close with a driven effort that passed narrowly wide, while City found it difficult to gain control in attacking areas. Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki were closely marked, as Simon Adingra and Eliezer Mayenda continued to pose problems on the break. Haaland registered City’s clearest opportunity of the half, but his low right footed effort was saved by Robin Roefs.

The second half continued in a similar pattern, with both sides committing numbers forward in an open and competitive contest. Savinho missed a close range chance shortly after the restart and later tested Roefs again, as City increased the tempo. Sunderland responded with chances of their own, with Donnarumma producing saves to deny Adingra and Mayenda, including an impressive one handed stop.

The closing stages saw chances at both ends, with Roefs producing a reflex save to keep out Joško Gvardiol and Nordi Mukiele blocking a goal bound effort from Jeremy Doku. Despite the attacking intent shown throughout the match, neither side was able to find a breakthrough.

The draw means Manchester City have still not lost their opening Premier League match of a calendar year since 2012. Sunderland, meanwhile, secured their first point in eight Premier League meetings with City and maintained their strong home form during the current campaign.
