Nick Kyrgios defeated women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-3 in the “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition in Dubai on Sunday. The match, which used special rules, was very different from the famous 1973 contest between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, where King fought for the recognition and prize money of women’s tennis.
In this exhibition, each player had just one serve, and Sabalenka’s side of the court was 9% smaller to reduce Kyrgios’ power advantage. Some critics questioned why the event was held, suggesting it was more about money and ratings than sport. Kyrgios, who has faced past controversies, played strongly despite nerves.
“It was a really tough match. She is an amazing player and champion,” said Kyrgios. “I’d love to play her again and show what I’ve got left.”
Sabalenka, who won the US Open in September, also wants a rematch. “I put up a great fight. Next time, I know his strengths and weaknesses, and it will be a better match. I love challenging myself,” she said.
