Maltese racing driver Jacob Micallef made his official single-seater debut this weekend at the opening round of the Spanish Winter Championship (E4 category) at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve on February 21–22.
Competing with Campos Racing, the 16-year-old stepped onto the Formula 4 stage for the first time against a competitive 32-car international grid. The Portimão event marked Round 1 of the three-round Winter Championship and represented Micallef’s first-ever race weekend in a Formula 4 car.
Friday’s schedule included Free Practice and Official Collective Test sessions, giving the Maltese driver his first experience in single-seater machinery and allowing him to begin adapting to the demands of Formula 4 competition.
Saturday featured Qualifying 1, Race 1 and the Sprint Race. Showing steady progression throughout the day, Micallef secured P16 out of 32 cars in qualifying — a solid result for his debut weekend at this level. The races provided valuable experience in race starts, wheel-to-wheel battles and tyre management as he continued to build confidence and consistency.
On Sunday, further improvements were evident in Qualifying 2, where Micallef demonstrated stronger pace and increased confidence. In Race 2, he showed particularly encouraging speed and was building momentum before becoming involved in an on-track incident that resulted in rear suspension damage. The contact, which was not of his making, forced an early retirement and cut short what had been shaping into a positive race.

Despite the setback, the weekend laid an important foundation in Micallef’s transition from karting to single-seaters as he begins his journey on the FIA Formula 4 pathway.
Reflecting on his debut weekend, Micallef said:
“It was quite a challenging weekend in Portimão, especially being my first time in the car, but I’ve learned a huge amount. I gained valuable experience in race craft, tyre management and understanding how to avoid mistakes in high-pressure situations. I think we showed good potential throughout the weekend — particularly in Race 2, where the pace was strong before the incident. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do about the contact that ended my race.
I would like to thank Campos Racing, my sponsors, the Malta Motorsport Federation and everyone who continues to support and believe in me. I’m very proud to represent Malta at this level. For next week in Jarama, I’ll apply everything I’ve learned to be more consistent in qualifying and the races and continue building step by step.”
From a management perspective, the focus throughout the weekend remained firmly on long-term development. Simon, CEO of SECTR Sports Management, said the approach was centred on process rather than immediate results.
“The approach this weekend was very much focused on Jacob’s development, as part of our philosophy at this stage of a driver’s career. The result comes as a consequence of doing the process right, and I think the foundation of our approach was good.
This weekend Jacob made a few natural rookie errors, which will be eliminated for next week. What has been really special about this weekend is that it has given us a clear matrix and KPIs showing where we are and where we need to improve. There is work we are going to do to best prepare for the next race in Jarama.
Overall, I’m super impressed with Jacob. Despite a few challenges, he kept a level head across the weekend and did himself proud in his first event. A big positive leaving Portimão is how strong we are foundationally. Now we look ahead to Jarama.”

Micallef is set to contest all three rounds of the Spanish F4 Winter Championship as part of his structured development programme and has also secured a full-season seat in the 2026 Spanish F4 Championship, underlining a clear long-term progression plan in international single-seater racing.
His programme is supported by SECTR Sports Management, the Malta Motorsport Federation, Schubert, DMMG Properties Ltd and Enemed, whose backing plays a key role in enabling his progression to FIA Formula 4 competition.
The championship continues next week at Circuito de Jarama in Spain, where Micallef will aim to build on his Portimão experience and continue his development in Round 2 of the series.
