India and Qatar are both working hard to win the right to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, each offering different strengths. While Qatar highlights its money and ready-made venues, India is focusing on a fresh project being developed in Ahmedabad.
The 2028 Games will be held in Los Angeles, and Brisbane will host in 2032. That leaves 2036 still open. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) hasn’t officially started the bidding process, but both countries are already campaigning behind the scenes.
Qatar officially announced its bid in July, backed by its royal family and a polished media campaign. It says 95% of its venues are already built, having hosted major events like the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2019 World Athletics Championships, and the 2006 Asian Games. However, Qatar has faced strong criticism for its treatment of migrant workers, its human rights record, and its laws affecting women and LGBTQ+ people. The World Cup brought these issues to global attention, with thousands of worker deaths reported during the construction boom.
India, on the other hand, is pushing forward with plans for a new Olympic zone in Ahmedabad, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Olympic Enclave. Its campaign has received support from key international figures, including Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, who has Indian heritage. India has also lined up major sporting events, like the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 World Athletics U20 Championships.
However, the IOC has concerns about governance issues in the Indian Olympic Association, doping levels, and India’s overall Olympic performance. Tensions with neighbouring Pakistan are also being closely watched.
Despite these challenges, both countries offer strong visions. Qatar is aligning its Olympic dream with its National Vision 2030, a plan for economic and social reform. India’s campaign fits into its Viksit Bharat 2047 plan, which marks 100 years of independence and aims to show India’s growing global role.
Qatar has tried and failed three times to host the Olympics, but believes it now has a stronger chance. India highlights that it is the only major economy that has never hosted the Games.
Other countries, like Turkey, Indonesia, Hungary, and Germany, have shown interest, but many observers feel Asia has a strong case this time. Out of 33 Summer Olympics so far, only four have been held in Asia, and only in three countries: Japan, South Korea, and China.
For now, the IOC is not rushing the decision. There is no deadline yet, but it is clear that both India and Qatar are determined to bring the Games home. It’s not just about venues or money, this is a contest shaped by values, politics, and each nation’s place in the world.
