Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has backed Lewis Hamilton following a difficult weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Hamilton finished 12th and was lapped, his worst-ever result at the track.
After a poor qualifying session, Hamilton was very critical of himself, saying he was “useless” and even suggesting Ferrari should look for a new driver. But Wolff said the seven-time world champion was just being emotional and honest.
“He was just speaking from the heart,” Wolff said. “He felt disappointed and said what he felt at the time. Lewis has always been open like that, even as a young man. But he’s still the greatest of all time. One bad weekend doesn’t change that.”
Wolff believes Hamilton still has a future in Formula 1, especially with big rule changes coming next year, including new cars and engines.
“He still has things to achieve in F1,” Wolff added. “Next year’s cars will be different to drive, and Lewis will have a fresh chance to show his talent. I hope he stays in the sport for years to come.”
