Bormla Subbuteo Club have once again brought glory to Malta after clinching first place in an international Subbuteo tournament held in Vienna, Austria. The Maltese side defeated Belgian club ST Stembert in the final with a commanding 2-0 victory, marking their third time winning this prestigious competition.

The final was a showcase of tactical precision and mental strength, as Bormla’s players executed their game plan flawlessly to outplay their experienced opponents. The team’s consistent performance throughout the tournament reaffirmed their status as one of the top clubs in international Subbuteo circles.
For ST Stembert, who featured Maltese player John Zammit, it was a commendable run to the final, their first in two years. Despite their loss, their campaign demonstrated improvement and renewed competitiveness on the international scene.

In the Open category, Malta also saw individual success. George Ebejer delivered an impressive tournament run, reaching the final, where he faced the formidable Saverio Bari. Despite a solid performance, Ebejer fell short in the decider. Fellow Maltese player Jean Tabone also impressed, making it to the semi-finals, where he too was eliminated by Bari, who eventually claimed the title.
Mark Gauci continued his upward trajectory in international tournaments by reaching the quarter-finals. Just a week prior, Gauci had made it to the last 16 at the Greek Grand Prix, further proving his consistency and growing stature in the sport.
The Veterans category saw strong representation from Malta. Charles Aquilina advanced to the semi-finals, showcasing his experience and skill. Jason Pisani reached the quarter-finals, while John Zammit, competing in both club and individual events, made it to the barrage round. Joseph Mifsud, despite a determined effort, was eliminated in the group stages.
This successful outing for Bormla Subbuteo Club and other Maltese athletes was made possible thanks to the ongoing support from SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee. Their backing continues to play a crucial role in helping local talent participate in international competitions, raising Malta’s profile in niche sports such as Subbuteo.
With multiple players reaching advanced stages across different categories and Bormla securing a third title, the tournament in Vienna was a clear testament to the strength and development of Subbuteo in Malta. The local scene continues to grow, driven by dedication, passion, and international exposure.
