Siġġiewi Rowing Club had a successful outing at the 2025 Tesori del Mediterraneo Regatta, held in Reggio Calabria, on the waters between Reggio Calabria and Messina. This challenging sprint race involved ten male teams, each made up of four rowers and a coxswain, racing in specially built boats over a 500-metre course. The event included some of Italy’s top rowing clubs, such as Fiamme Gialle and the National Fixed-Seat Rowing Federation (FICSF).
Siġġiewi’s team was made up of rowers Joseph Grima, Lawrence Ciantar, Kensly Ciantar and Mark Schembri, with Irene Busuttil Tonna as the coxswain. They put in a strong performance and won Final B with the best time of the day.
Rowing veteran Lawrence Ciantar described the experience as both an honour and a great learning opportunity: “Racing in Reggio Calabria against top Italian teams was a proud moment for us. It’s another important step for our club in gaining international experience, especially in open-sea conditions, which are very different from the Maltese Harbour.”

The Club’s President, who was recently awarded the “Onorifiċenza Mertu Siġġiewi”, spoke about the cultural and sporting links the regatta helps to strengthen: “Around 350 years ago, the Calabrian artist Mattia Preti gifted Siġġiewi with a painting of our patron saint, St Nicholas. Today, through sport and rowing, we are continuing to build that historic friendship with Reggio Calabria, two coastal towns joined by both history and the sea.”
Siġġiewi Rowing Club also thanked BeActive, SportMalta for supporting their participation through the 2025 International Participation Scheme (IP-2025-059).Siġġiewi Rowing Club Wins Final B at the 2025 Tesori del Mediterraneo Regatta
