Bronze for Siġġiewi Rowing Club Crew at the 2025 Taranto Endurance Regatta “Porte dello Jonio Cup”

Siġġiewi Rowing Club rowers Mark Schembri, Joseph Grima, Eduardo Saraiva de Oliveira and Carlos Daniel Asin, expertly coxed by Michele Dagostino, managed to secure a well-earned third place in the fixed-seat endurance “Gozzo Nazionale” race held last month in Taranto, Italy.

This regatta, known as the “Rowing Endurance – Porte delloJonio Cup,” was hosted by ASD Palio di Taranto and took place in the rather turbulent waters surrounding Taranto’s historic old town.  This regatta course spans approximately 3km with races typically taking approximately 20 minutes.

The Regatta is sanctioned by the Federazione Italiana Canottaggio Sedile Fisso (FICSF), the CONI-affiliated Italian fixed-seat rowing federation.

For Siġġiewi Rowing Club, participation in international regattas is considered essential for the formation of their athletes, sharing rowing knowledge and culture, and building friendships across the very diverse rowing communities worldwide.

“Such events allow our athletes to row alongside more experienced rowers from other countries, sharpening their skills and strategies, while also gaining valuable experience in adapting to different boats, water and weather conditions.”

This particular regatta included races on the Gozzo Nazionale,  a coxed fixed-seat quad, the traditional “Lancie” boats with 10 oars, and also a folkloric race in which athletes row standing.  Siġġiewi rower Mark Schembri rowed in this traditional race with female rower Dory Rabindo finishing with a very respectable 4th overall placing.

Participation in this regatta was made possible thanks to the support of SportMalta to Siġġiewi Rowing Club through the International  Participation Scheme.
