The first round of the Top Four phase in the Maltese Women’s League concludes with a highly anticipated showdown between Hibernians and Swieqi United. Both teams have proven their mettle this season, and with just two points separating them, the match promises to be a decisive encounter.
Currently sitting atop the table with 37 points, Hibernians are aiming to maintain their lead and extend their advantage. However, Swieqi, who trail closely with 35 points, are fresh from a narrow victory over Birkirkara and will be eager to capitalise on the momentum. Hibernians were held to a draw by Mġarr last week, leaving them with work to do to stay ahead.
Hibernians possess the league’s most potent attack, having scored 64 goals this season while conceding just 10. Swieqi, on the other hand, have scored 49 goals but boast a slightly stronger defensive record, conceding only nine.
Birkirkara and Mġarr in Crucial Mid-Table Clash
Elsewhere in the Top Four, reigning champions Birkirkara face Mġarr in a must-win contest. Birkirkara, who have 32 points, suffered a setback last week with a defeat to Swieqi, leaving them five points adrift of league leaders Hibernians. Victory is crucial if they hope to stay in the title race.
Birkirkara have netted 62 goals this season, giving them the second-best attacking record in the league, but defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern, with 16 goals conceded.
Mġarr, on the other hand, boast the most resolute defence in the Top Four, having conceded only seven goals. However, their attacking output has been their weak point, with a league-low 47 goals among the top contenders.
San Ġwann Eye Stability in the Bottom Four
In the Bottom Four, San Ġwann will look to consolidate their position as group leaders when they take on Valletta. San Ġwann, powered by the league’s top scorer Hailey Russell, have collected 22 points. Russell has netted 16 goals this season, making her a key figure in their success.
Valletta, currently second with 18 points, will be seeking to narrow the gap at the top. Behind them, Lija Athletic sit on seven points, while Mtarfa remain winless, still searching for their first points of the campaign.
As the season progresses, each game takes on greater significance, and this weekend’s fixtures will undoubtedly be pivotal in shaping the race for the league title and overall standings.
