The President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, welcomed the athletes of Special Olympics Malta to San Anton Palace to mark the 25th anniversary of the organisation. She was joined by Dr Lydia Abela, President of Special Olympics Malta, and National Director Ms Anna Calleja.
The President praised the athletes, calling them a true example of courage and strength. She thanked them for their contribution to the country and encouraged them to stay positive, confident, and active in their communities. She also thanked the committee and volunteers for their hard work and support.
Dr Lydia Abela spoke about how this anniversary is not just a time to look back on past achievements, but also a moment to reflect on Malta’s progress in becoming a more inclusive and respectful society for people with intellectual disabilities.

She said that, on behalf of over 2,500 athletes, Special Olympics Malta is very grateful to the State and to the people of Malta and Gozo for their continued support in helping people with intellectual disabilities develop fully, both physically and mentally.
Dr Abela also announced the launch of a new programme called “Strong Minds”, which will focus on supporting athletes’ mental health as they grow in their sporting journey.
