Malta Sport is informed that Jean Claude Micallef met Maltese associations at the Royal Malta Golf Club as part of his campaign for the post of Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
During the session, Micallef is understood to have presented his vision ahead of the vote of confidence that will decide the role. According to information obtained by Malta Sport, around 55 sports administrators, many of whom are expected to vote in the election on 25 March, attended the meeting, while Micallef also sought the backing of other associations and stakeholders.
Sources present at the meeting told Malta Sport that Micallef handled the discussion in a calm and structured manner as representatives raised a number of points. He is understood to have stressed the need for the Maltese Olympic Committee to be more independent from the central government through sustainable income measures that would give the committee greater financial autonomy, rather than leaving it dependent on a government department. He also reportedly spoke about the need to raise the profile of sport among different contributors, including central government, while ensuring that support goes beyond funding and also helps athletes develop a winning mentality.
Malta Sport is also informed that the promotion of athletes, administrative bureaucracy and a more modern strategic marketing approach were among the main themes addressed by Micallef during the session. Those present were given what was described as an official outline of the key points he intends to focus on if elected Secretary General.
It is further understood that in the lead-up to the election, Micallef will also hold discussions with both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition as he continues to gather support and strengthen his position in an election that is expected to be contested by Joe Cassar and Sue Mercieca.
