Olympic Esports spark officially lit in Lausanne ahead of 2027 debut

More than 120 people from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), sports federations, and the video gaming industry gathered in Lausanne on Monday for the Publishers and Developers Forum. This event marked a major step towards the first Olympic Esports Games, which will take place in Riyadh in 2027.

The forum included presentations and panel discussions about how esports are growing as a competitive global activity. Speakers also discussed challenges such as technology, rules, and how to keep the Olympic spirit alive in a digital format. A key message was the importance of teamwork between the IOC and game developers to create something lasting and respectful.

The idea to start the Olympic Esports Games was officially approved in July 2023. Riyadh will not only host the first event of its kind, but it will also become the first Arab city to hold a full Olympic event. While it won’t be as big as the Summer or Winter Games, it’s a big move that could shape the future of the Olympic movement.

The event also looked at how esports can be governed fairly, and which games might be included in future editions. The goal is to find a balance between Olympic traditions and the digital age.

Organisers said this forum was the start of an exciting journey. Although Olympic esports is still new, it could one day stand proudly beside traditional Olympic sports.
