Valletta strengthened their push for a top-two finish with a 2–1 victory over Gżira United at the Gozo Stadium on Sunday.

With this win, Thane Micallef’s side move up to fourth place in the Top 6 standings on 20 points, just two behind joint second-placed Ħamrun Spartans and Marsaxlokk.

After a goalless first half, Valletta broke the deadlock in the 50th minute in spectacular fashion. Brazilian forward Yuri Messias spotted goalkeeper Karl Sargent off his line and unleashed a long-range strike from near the halfway line, finding the back of the net.

Valletta doubled their lead just 12 minutes later when Jackson Mendoza fired a powerful effort from outside the box, leaving Sargent with no chance once again.

Gżira United managed to pull one back in the third minute of stoppage time, but it proved too late to mount a comeback, as Valletta held on to secure three crucial points.
