YoHealth Malta Premier 2025/2026 Opening Round – Top 6 – MD15
Floriana………………….0
Ħamrun Spartans..…..2
Two second-half goals from two substitutes earned Ħamrun Spartans a crucial three points against league leaders Floriana, cutting the gap at the top to just one point with one match remaining in the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round.
The first half ended goalless, with Floriana enjoying the better of the play but found Henry Bonello in great shape making crucial saves. However, the match turned in Ħamrun’s favour just before the hour mark when Spartans coach made two key substitutions, introducing Brazilian winger Jonny, back after months sidelined by injury, and Thioune.
Jonny immediately showed he was back to full fitness and made a decisive impact in the 76th minute. After a brilliant solo run down the right, he unleashed a shot from outside the box and although Floriana goalkeeper Cioletti managed to get a fingertip to the ball, it still found its way into the net, sparking celebrations among the Ħamrun supporters.
Just four minutes later, the Spartans doubled their advantage when substitute Cadjenovic needed only a minute on the pitch to leave his mark. A pass from Jonny saw Mbong cleverly dummy the ball, allowing it to run into Candjenovic’s path with the midfielder making no mistake, firing a low shot past Cioletti to seal a 2-0 victory.
The result extended Ħamrun Spartans’ impressive run against Floriana, whom they have not lost to since 2018.
