Sliema Wanderers president Keith Perry has delivered a bold message ahead of the new season, declaring that the Premier League side is “the greatest club in Malta” and will challenge for every trophy available in 2025-26.
Speaking at the squad launch held at the headquarters of the club’s new main sponsors, Interwetten, Perry made his ambitions crystal clear. “Only one thing can satisfy us, and that is winning,” he said. After narrowly missing out on European football last term, the committee wasted no time, immediately rolling up their sleeves and working hard to ensure the team is ready to achieve and win everything possible this season.
During the club’s official squad presentation, Malta Sport asked Perry about his expectations for the season ahead. The president confidently stated that with the new targeted signings, Sliema Wanderers are aiming to win domestically and bring silverware back to the club in the upcoming campaign.
Perry explained that following last season’s disappointment, the club’s leadership faced a choice: scale down expenses due to the lack of European revenue or make sacrifices to strengthen the team. They chose the latter. The result has been a string of targeted signings, including Malta internationals Rashed Al Tumi and Luke Montebello, Croatian midfielder Roko Prsa, and Brazilian winger Fernandinho. “If you are challenging for the honours, you need the best players in the market, and that is what we have done,” Perry said. “Our target is simple, win every match, qualify for Europe, and challenge for every domestic competition. Nobody should finish above us this season.”
Head Coach Paul Zammit admitted that missing out on European football was a personal and professional blow. “We worked hard all year, showed consistency and character, and then lost our European chance in the final seconds against Birkirkara. Without the unwavering support of President Keith Perry, Vice President Walter Arciola, and the entire Sliema family who believed in me, I wouldn’t be standing here today,” Zammit said.
Looking ahead, Zammit said he has great hopes for the upcoming season and is determined to turn ambition into success. He praised the players’ work ethic during pre-season and acknowledged the growing competitiveness across the league. “I believe every club has strengthened. It’s going to be a long, tough season, but I’m confident we are ready not only for the good moments but also for the difficult ones where our character will be tested,” he added.
Sliema Wanderers open their YoHealth Premier League campaign with their sights firmly set on silverware.
