The National Stadium will host one of the marquee fixtures of the season this weekend as Ħamrun Spartans and Valletta FC, joint second in the YoHealth Malta Premier standings, collide in a high-stakes Matchday 12 showdown, this Saturday at 4pm.
This will be the first game from the Top 6, Phase 2 of the Opening Round.
Both teams enter the weekend level on 22 points, each with six wins, four draws, and just one defeat. This is more than a top-of-the-table contest: it is a battle between two sides with parallel trajectories and identical ambitions. Ħamrun arrive unbeaten in their last three league outings, having recently defeated Floriana and Birkirkara. Their only league setback came against Sliema Wanderers, yet Modica’s team have responded strongly, adding convincing Jubilee Cup wins over Senglea and Floriana to their momentum. Valletta, meanwhile, suffered a shock defeat to Żabbar in their last league match, ending their unbeaten streak. But their overall form remains impressive, with victories over Hibernians, Naxxar Lions, Mosta, Floriana, Marsaxlokk, and Tarxien.
Both sides also remain active in the Jubilee Cup, where they are set to meet again on 30 November, adding further depth to an already compelling rivalry in a quarter-final match.
Valletta boast the division’s most in-form forward, with Yuri de Jesus Messias, who has netted seven league goals so far. Support has come from Thaylor Aldama who scored two and a long list of single-goal contributors, giving Thane Micallef multiple attacking outlets.
Ħamrun, despite scoring one goal fewer than Valletta, with 15 goals, have a more even spread of scorers, with eight different players on the scoresheet. García, El Fanis, Mbong, Koffi, and Smajlagic lead the charge with two goals each. Their multi-source attack underlines a system that does not rely on a single match-winner.
Brandon Paiber and Andrea Zammit have been pivotal for Valletta in supplying chances, each recording two assists. For Ħamrun, Hadzi, Mbong, and Smajlagic lead the assist charts, also with two each.

Historically, Ħamrun have enjoyed the upper hand. They are unbeaten in the last five league meetings (three wins, two draws) and have scored in each of the last 11 encounters. The last time Ħamrun failed to score against Valletta dates back to December 2019. Their previous league meeting this season ended 1-1 on Matchday 2.
A goalless draw between these sides is rare. In fact, the last 0-0 came eight years ago, in November 2017.
Both sides will be wary of yellow-card accumulations:
• Valletta’s Neil Anthony Micallef sits on three yellows, with the team accumulating 26 overall.
• Ħamrun have four players on the brink of suspension: El Fanis, Polito, Nikolai Micallef, and Marcelina.
Giacomo Modica’s Ħamrun have accumulated an impressive 2 points per match this season, winning 11 of his first 16 league games at the club.
Thane Micallef’s Valletta average 1.53 points per match under his leadership, though he has yet to defeat Ħamrun as Valletta coach, with two losses and one draw.
Head-to-head coaching history slightly favours Ħamrun, yet in a fixture like this, form and tactics often outweigh past records.
With both sides chasing leaders and eyeing European ambitions, this match could define the trajectory of the next phase of the season. Victory would propel either team into a stronger title-challenger position, while defeat risks losing ground in a tightly contested Premier League race.
A packed National Stadium, two teams level on points, a rivalry rich in goals, and star players in peak form.
All ingredients are in place for one of the standout matches of the 2025/26 YoHealth Malta Premier League season.
