In the second match on Friday from Matchday 9 of the YoHealth Malta Premier League, Gżira United built on their first win before the international break by defeating Tarxien Rainbows 3-1. This marked the second straight win for coach Darren Abdilla since returning for his third spell in charge of Gżira.
In the 28th minute, Tarxien were reduced to ten men after Tavares handled the ball on the goal line following a shot by Penha da Costa. From the penalty spot, captain Bohrer Mentz made no mistake and put the Maroons ahead.
In the 37th minute, Gżira doubled their lead through Penha da Costa, who cut inside from the left and fired a low shot from the edge of the box into the top corner. The first half ended 2-0 to the Maroons.
In the 85th minute, Tarxien pulled one back when Filipe scored with a header from a corner. However, just two minutes later, in the 87th minute, Penha da Costa struck again with a powerful low shot from the right to seal a 3-1 win for Gżira United.
