Ħamrun Spartans face a true European heavyweight in the UEFA Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round – Dynamo Kyiv. The Ukrainian club boasts a rich history, having won the Ukrainian Premier League 17 times and the Soviet Top League 13 times. They are also two-time UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup champions and have long been a symbol of Ukrainian football pride. Legends like Andriy Shevchenko and coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi are forever tied to the club’s identity.
Dynamo’s fiercest rivalry remains with Shakhtar Donetsk in what is known as the Klasychne derby. Although Shakhtar had the upper hand in recent years, Dynamo reclaimed domestic glory by winning the 2024–25 Ukrainian Premier League, their first title since 2021. The triumph was sealed with a crucial draw against Chornomorets Odesa, underlining a return to form.

Yet, their success comes amid enormous off-field challenges. The ongoing war in Ukraine has forced Dynamo to play their home fixtures abroad, train under constant uncertainty, and rely heavily on local talent and resilience.
Among their players, captain Andriy Yarmolenko is the standout name. A veteran of European football, Yarmolenko previously played in the English Premier League with West Ham United and in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. He remains a key figure in the Ukrainian national team, bringing leadership and experience to a youthful squad.
Although Ħamrun Spartans are clear underdogs in this tie, a performance like the one that saw them overcome FK Žalgiris in the previous round could make life difficult for the Ukrainian giants. A strong result at home this Tuesday would give the Spartans a valuable platform to head to Poland with belief and determination.
