Sørloth hat-trick sends Atlético through

Club Brugge could not repeat their strong first-leg performance as Alexander Sørloth took full advantage of poor defending to help Atlético Madrid win 4-1 in the second leg of their Champions League play-off. Atlético went through 7-4 on aggregate after the first match had finished 3-3.

Atlético had the first big chance when Giuliano Simeone met a dangerous cross, but Brugge survived after a VAR check for a possible foul by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

The home side took the lead midway through the first half. Sørloth held the ball up well, turned Brandon Mechele too easily and fired a shot that slipped past Mignolet.

Brugge responded well. Mechele made up for his mistake by flicking on a corner for Joel Ordóñez to score and level the tie on aggregate again. Soon after, Christos Tzolis set up Hugo Vetlesen, but Jan Oblak made an excellent save to keep the scores level at half-time.

Atlético regained control early in the second half. Johnny Cardoso scored his first Champions League goal with a powerful shot from outside the box. Tzolis tried to reply quickly, but Oblak saved again.

Brugge pushed forward but could not break through. Sørloth made it 3-1 after good work from substitutes Ademola Lookman and Antoine Griezmann. He then completed his hat-trick late on, left unmarked from a corner, to seal a comfortable win.

Atlético are now unbeaten in 20 Champions League knockout matches in normal time. They will face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16, with the draw taking place on Friday.
