Inter Milan beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 away from home but still missed out on a top-eight place in the Champions League table. Both teams will now have to play in the play-offs.
With both sides needing a win and help from other results, the first half was cautious. Dortmund started brighter and should have scored, but Serhou Guirassy wasted a clear chance from close range and shot straight at Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
Inter also had chances. Federico Dimarco hit a strong volley that went close, while Yann Bisseck and Ange-Yoan Bonny both missed good opportunities before half-time.
The game stayed tight after the break, but the pace picked up when news from other matches gave hope to the winner. Inter began to push forward and created chances through Francesco Pio Esposito, one of which was well blocked by Ramy Bensebaini.
Inter finally took the lead late on. Henrikh Mkhitaryan won a free-kick on the edge of the area, and Dimarco curled a brilliant shot over the wall and into the net. Dortmund struggled to respond, and Inter made it 2–0 in stoppage time when Andy Diouf scored after working space in the box.
Despite the win, late goals in other matches meant Inter finished 10th on goal difference and must go into the play-offs. Dortmund also move into the play-offs after failing to win their final three league games.
