Real Madrid will now have to play in the Champions League play-offs after losing 4-2 away to Benfica. The defeat left Real ninth in the league phase, just outside the top eight. Benfica finished 24th, thanks to a dramatic late goal from their goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, in the 98th minute.
This was the first time the two famous clubs had played each other since 1965. Benfica needed a win and started strongly, creating early chances. They were first awarded a penalty, but the referee changed his mind after checking VAR. Benfica kept pushing, and although Real had a few chances, it was Kylian Mbappé who scored first for the visitors after 30 minutes.
Benfica quickly responded. Andreas Schjelderup headed in an equaliser, and just before half-time Vangelis Pavlidis scored a penalty to put the hosts 2-1 up.
Early in the second half, Schjelderup scored again after a good team move, making it 3-1. Mbappé then scored his second goal to pull Real back to 3-2. Both teams had chances, but the goalkeepers made several saves.
Real’s night got worse in stoppage time when they had two players sent off. With the last kick of the match, Benfica won a free-kick. Trubin went up for it and headed the ball into the net, sealing a famous 4-2 win.
