Erling Haaland scored his 50th UEFA Champions League goal in just his 49th match, helping Manchester City beat Napoli 2-0 at home. This win continues Napoli’s poor record in England, where they have now failed to win in 13 matches.
The game saw an early chance for City’s new signing, Tijjani Reijnders, whose long-range shot tested the Napoli keeper. After 17 minutes, Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo was shown a red card for a foul on Haaland, following a VAR review.
Despite having the extra man, City struggled to break down Napoli in the first half. Phil Foden and Rodri had shots saved, and Napoli’s goalkeeper Milinković-Savić made several great stops, including one to prevent an own goal just before half-time.
City finally took the lead 11 minutes into the second half. Rodri passed to Foden, who chipped the ball into the box, and Haaland headed it over the goalkeeper to score. It was a record-breaking 50th Champions League goal for the Norwegian striker.
Ten minutes later, Jérémy Doku scored a well-taken second goal to seal the win for City. Napoli held on defensively after that, but the damage was done.
City now have back-to-back wins for the first time this season, while Napoli lost their perfect start to the new campaign.
