Marcus Rashford scored twice as Barcelona began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win away to Newcastle United. The result continues Barça’s strong record against English teams, with 13 wins in their last 17 meetings.
The atmosphere at St. James’ Park was electric, and Newcastle started well. They put early pressure on the visitors, with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes going close. However, Barcelona slowly settled into the game and began to control possession.
Despite having the ball for long periods, Barça struggled to create clear chances in the first half. Newcastle defended strongly, and goalkeeper Joan García made key saves to keep the score level at the break.
The second half saw Barcelona step up. Just before the hour, Rashford headed home from a Koundé cross to give the visitors the lead. A few minutes later, he scored again, this time a brilliant solo effort into the top corner, silencing the home fans.
Newcastle kept pushing and got a late goal from Anthony Gordon in the 90th minute, giving the home side hope. But Barcelona held on to secure all three points.
