England coach Gareth Southgate was pleased after his team’s 2-0 win over Ukraine in the second round of European Championship qualifiers.
“I am very satisfied with the match. We even repaired the possession, which was not the best for us in Italy. I know that sometimes it gets boring for the boys, but today they were up to the task. The pressing was excellent, we prepared well physically for two difficult games. It was a pleasure working with these guys,” said Southgate.
England could not count on Manchester City footballer Phil Foden against Ukraine, who had to have an appendix operation right before the match.
“Fortunately, there was no drama. He had symptoms the previous day and it is clear that he needs to see a specialist. Now he is recovering and seems to be fine. I’m sorry that he couldn’t be involved in this match,” said the England coach.
In the next round, England will visit Malta on June 16, and they welcome that match with a maximum of six points after victories against Italy and Ukraine.
