Napoli drop points as Genoa fight back to draw

Napoli’s grip on top spot in Serie A has weakened after a 2-2 home draw against Genoa, leaving them just one point ahead of Inter with only two games to play. The result also ends Napoli’s run of four consecutive wins.

With Inter winning earlier in the day, Napoli needed a victory to keep their lead in the title race. They started strongly, with Matteo Politano nearly scoring in the opening minutes. The breakthrough came after 15 minutes through a smooth team move from the back. Scott McTominay played Romelu Lukaku in on goal, and the Belgian striker finished neatly with his right foot.

Napoli pushed for a second, and Giacomo Raspadori went close, but his shot was well saved by Genoa goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist. Slowly, Genoa grew into the game and began to trouble Napoli’s defence. Andrea Pinamonti hit the crossbar from a free-kick, and shortly after, Junior Messias delivered a dangerous cross that led to a chaotic equaliser. Honest Ahanor’s header caused confusion, and Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret ended up pushing the ball onto the post and back off himself into the net.

Napoli came out firing after the break and nearly scored again through Lukaku and Raspadori, but Siegrist stood firm. Eventually, their efforts paid off when McTominay set up Raspadori, who finished confidently to make it 2-1.

But Genoa refused to give up. As Napoli dropped deeper to protect their lead, the visitors struck again. A cross from Aaron Martin found Johan Vásquez, who headed in the equaliser. Philip Billing almost snatched it late for Napoli, but his header went wide.

The final whistle saw both sides take a point, a result that was surely welcomed by Inter fans as the title race heats up.
