Højlund’s late penalty seals dramatic Napoli win at Genoa

Napoli claimed a dramatic 3-2 away win over Genoa after Rasmus Højlund scored a penalty deep into stoppage time at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Genoa took an early lead when Ruslan Malinovskyi converted a penalty after Vitinha was fouled by goalkeeper Alex Meret. Napoli responded well and turned the game around before the break. Højlund scored from close range after Scott McTominay’s shot was saved, before McTominay himself fired in a fine long-range effort to give Napoli a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Napoli struggled after the restart, especially after McTominay was forced off injured. Genoa levelled the score when Lorenzo Colombo took advantage of a defensive mistake to make it 2-2. The visitors were then reduced to ten men when Juan Jesus was sent off for a second yellow card.

Just when it looked like Genoa would earn a point, Napoli were awarded a late penalty after a foul in the box. Højlund kept his nerve and scored in the 95th minute to seal the win.

The victory brings Napoli within six points of league leaders Inter Milan, while Genoa remain six points above the relegation zone.
