Victoria Hotspurs made it three wins out of three with a comfortable victory over Siggiewi by two goals to nil in an entertaining match at the Centenary Stadium. The Hotspurs now top the Amateur League 2 table with 9 points from 3 games followed by Dingli Swallows and Mdina Knights, both on 7 points after their victories against Ghaxaq and Ta’ Xbiex respectively.
Ghaxaq 1 Dingli Swallows 2
After a varied start to the season in Amateur League 2, both Ghaxaq and Dingli Swallows were looking to gain more points in their quest to finish in the upper echelons of the table. Ghaxaq came close on 9 minutes when Aaron Agius had a brilliant shot from just inside the box that slammed against the post. Ghaxaq again came close on 25 minutes when Jurgen Gerada had a point blank shot that was cleared off the lane by Jake Bugeja.
Ghaxaq finally took the lead a minute from half time when Aaron Agius found the net from close range. Ghaxaq left off where they started in the second half and had a great chance to go two goals clear when a brilliant shot by Agius forced a great save from Benjelloun. Another huge chance went begging on 63 minutes with Gerada shooting well over from point blank range.
Dingli came close to equalize on 70 minutes when Daley Ronaldinho had a fine header that was well saved by Luke Vella. And two minutes later, Dingli equalised with a superb effort by Jason Camilleri that cannoned past Vella into the corner.
And it was Dingli who clinched the winning goal on the 90 minute mark when Daley Ronaldinho sprang the offside trap to cooly finish past Vella much to the delight of the sizeable Swallows support.
St Georges 3 Mqabba 1
St George’s started brightly and took the lead after just 3 minutes through a fine effort by Erson Schembri. After a rather staid period in which Mqabba attempted a reaction, St George’s doubled the score on 34 minutes. A fine cross by Sam Kind found Kenneth Aquilina who made no mistake from close range easily beating Mario Bartolo.
St George’s had a chance to close off the match at the start of the second half when Kenneth Aquilina went on a probing run with his well saved by Bartolo. Mqabba pressed hard after that and finally reduced the deficit 11 minutes from time through Neil Magri with a simple tap in.
But it was St George’s who sealed an impressive victory three minutes from time when substitute Julian Ieuweke managed to spring the offside trap and cooly round Mario Bartolo for the Cospicua side’s third with the vociferous support ecstatic.
