Trustin Farrugia Cann, an engineer by profession and a former FIFA referee, is set to become the new vice president of the Malta FA. Nominations closed last Friday, with Farrugia Cann the sole candidate to fill the vacancy created when Dr Maria Azzopardi was appointed secretary general.
Formal confirmation is expected at the General Assembly on Thursday, 16 October 2025. The new position will require him to retire from active refereeing. Aged 39, Farrugia Cann began his refereeing career in December 2001. He took charge of his first Malta Premier League match in 2010, spent ten years on the FIFA list and has officiated more than 200 matches in domestic and international competitions.
His move follows statutory changes approved at the association’s most recent Annual General Meeting. Article 27 on elections was amended to remove the requirement that one of the vice president roles must be filled by a female candidate, while a related edit to Article 34 on the composition of the Executive Board deleted the phrase “at least one of which shall be female.”
Farrugia Cann will sit on the bureau alongside the other two vice presidents, Dr Matthew Paris and Adrian Casha, the latter a former FIFA referee and a past director of the refereeing department.
