The Malta Football Assocition is about to conclude all the procedures against former goalkeeper of Qala Saints Leonard Camilleri who allegedly acted as a middleman to try and influence the Nadur Youngsters goalkeeper Steve Sultana to throw away at least one match of the Gozo Football League of last season 2023/24.
This website is informed that MFA Prosecutor Dr Herman Mula has finished hearing all the testimony of both Mr Camilleri and that of Mr Sultana along with Nadur Youngsters officials. Leonard Camilleri who still plays football but in the second tier in Gozo with Zebbug FC, is being assisted by his legal aide Dr Frank Tabone.
In a twist of events, the MFA in the meantime has accepted to postpone the hearing of the other individual involved in this match fixing saga. In fact Qala player Manuel Scerri has made a request through his Malta based Georgian Sports lawyer that his hearing of today is postponed to another day due to the fact that this weekend he was due to get married. His request was upheld. This site is informed that both the MFA and the GFA want this case to come to a close before the start of the 2024/25 season.
Qala Saints, as a club are also being charged with being responsible of this match fixing attempt . The Club is risking a hefty fine and a possible relegation to Division 2.
Nadur Youngsters themselves had been relegated to Division 2 and fined €4,000 way back in 2015 after a Club official was charged with trying to fix the outcome of a game played in February of the same year between Nadur and Xewkija Tigers.
The conclusions of Dr Mula acting as the prosecutor of the MFA will then be sent to the MFA Board to Adjudicate Charges relating to Bribery and Illegal Betting and a disciplinary decision will be issued.
Apart from the fact that Manuel Scerri and Leonard Camilleri are facing lifetime bans from football, they are also being criminally charged separately in court. They are facing charges that can result in a prison sentence.
