Paul Mbong seals move to Serbia’s Čukarički after tumultuous Birkirkara exit

Paul Mbong’s transfer to Serbian top-flight side Čukarički marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career, drawing a clear line under a turbulent final spell at Birkirkara FC. The 23-year-old Maltese international, long regarded as one of the country’s brightest attacking talents, completed the move following a disciplinary dispute that overshadowed his final weeks at the club.

Mbong, who came through Birkirkara’s youth system and established himself as a dynamic winger, saw his relationship with the club deteriorate after internal disciplinary action. He was suspended and fined by Birkirkara in a controversial decision he later appealed, unsuccessfully before the Malta Football Association. As a result, he was left out of the squad for the final of the IZIBET FA Trophy, a match that would mark the end of his time at the club.

The breakdown in relations made Mbong’s departure seem inevitable, and his decision to seek a new challenge abroad was widely viewed as the natural next step. Despite the acrimony surrounding his exit, his on-pitch record speaks for itself: 155 appearances, 17 goals, and 21 assists for Birkirkara, as well as 31 caps and two goals for the Maltese national team.

Born on 2 September 2001, Mbong is known for his speed, close control, and versatility—traits that have made him a constant presence in both domestic and international fixtures. Capable of playing on either wing, he has often been the creative spark for both club and country.

Mbong has now signed a two-year contract with Čukarički and expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to test himself in a new environment. “My first impressions of the club are fantastic,” he said, highlighting Čukarički’s European aspirations as a major factor in his decision. While acknowledging he was relatively unfamiliar with Serbian football, Mbong pointed to the success of several Balkan players in the Maltese Premier League, particularly those who play alongside his brother, Joseph Mbong, at Ħamrun Spartans—as proof of the region’s footballing pedigree.

His move to Belgrade comes at a critical point in his career, and both player and club view the transfer as mutually beneficial. For Čukarički, it’s a calculated investment in a player with international experience and a point to prove.
