The Malta Football Association (MFA) has welcomed the new policy introduced by the Ministry and the Planning Authority to strengthen the framework for the sustainable development of sports facilities in Malta. The initiative aligns with the Commercialisation of Sports Facilities Regulations (S.L. 455.12) and aims to provide clearer planning guidance while ensuring that the primary purpose of sports facilities remains protected.
The MFA has consistently supported measures that help clubs and sporting entities improve their infrastructure, enhance community services, and secure long-term sustainability. The Association emphasises the importance of continued cooperation with the Ministry and relevant authorities to shape policies that benefit the wider sports ecosystem.
The Malta Premier League, which includes the twelve top division football clubs in Malta, has also welcomed the public consultation conducted by the Government and the Planning Authority on the commercialisation of sports facilities. The League believes that the proposed policy strikes a fair balance, allowing sports entities to generate sustainable revenue while ensuring that the public receives acceptable value from state-owned properties. The initiative also safeguards the environment and maintains sport as the central focus of all facility projects.
Similarly, the Gozo Football Association (GFA), in collaboration with the MFA, has expressed full support for the initiative. The policy provides sports organisations with clear guidelines on planning while protecting the primary function of sports facilities. The GFA has long advocated for measures that improve club facilities, expand community access, and promote sustainable operations.
By providing structured guidance and reinforcing sustainability, the policy is expected to benefit clubs, athletes, and communities across Malta and Gozo, supporting long-term development and growth in the sporting sector.
