Real Madrid slip up in title race after home defeat to Getafe

Getafe won at the Bernabéu for the first time since 2008 after a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid, damaging their rivals’ hopes of winning the league title.

Getafe were without several key players and had lost their previous 16 league matches at this ground, so they started carefully. They had their goalkeeper, David Soria, to thank for keeping the score level early on. Vinícius Júnior took advantage of a mistake by Sebastián Boselli but was denied by Soria. Arda Güler also had a close-range effort saved after making space for himself in the box.

Although Real Madrid had good chances, Getafe were playing well and deserved their goal. Antonio Rüdiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni failed to clear a cross properly, allowing Martín Satriano to score with a superb volley into the top corner. It was Getafe’s first goal against Real Madrid in five meetings and only their second first-half goal in 18 league matches.

Getafe began the second half strongly, while Real Madrid grew more frustrated despite creating more chances. Substitutes tried to make a difference, but neither Dean Huijsen nor Rodrygo could convert dangerous crosses from Franco Mastantuono. Real struggled to break through the middle, and strong defending from Domingos Duarte, along with more excellent saves from Soria, secured a famous win for Getafe.

Mastantuono was sent off in the final moments for dissent, adding to Real’s disappointment.

They now sit four points behind league leaders Barcelona, who won 4-1 earlier in the weekend. Even a late red card for Getafe’s Adrián Liso could not spoil a memorable victory, which leaves them eight points clear of the relegation zone with 12 matches remaining.
