Former Valencia player José Castillejo lost his life in flash floods that have devastated the city. The official death toll in the eastern region has surpassed 150, with fears that more casualties may be reported as emergency services continue their search.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared Valencia a “disaster zone” as torrential rain trapped many residents in their homes and vehicles. The region remains under yellow and amber weather warnings, with further rain expected.
In response to the heartbreaking news, Valencia CF released a statement expressing their sorrow over Castillejo’s passing. “Valencia CF mourns the passing of José Castillejo, a casualty of the flash floods. He came up through the club’s youth system and played for several teams in the region,” the statement read.
Castillejo, who was just 28 years old, had a career that included time at clubs such as Eldense, Bunol, Recambios Colon, Roda, Torre Levante, and Vilamarxant. Roda released their own tribute, stating, “We regret to announce the death of José Castillejo, who defended our shirt during the 18/19 season. Rest in peace, José.”
Eldense also expressed their condolences, highlighting the tragic nature of the situation and extending their sympathies to Castillejo’s family and friends.

As a result of the floods, Valencia’s Copa del Rey match against Parla Escuela has been postponed, along with their upcoming La Liga clash with Real Madrid.
