Young forward Gunner Elliott has signed his first professional contract with Chesterfield FC, the club announced. The agreement, which coincided with his 17th birthday, marked a major milestone in the player’s early footballing career.
Elliott, who has strong Maltese links and has represented Malta at youth level, was rewarded for a standout 2024–25 season in the club’s academy, during which he scored 14 goals across various youth competitions, including one in the FA Youth Cup against Shrewsbury Town.
The club highlighted his development over recent months, noting that Elliott made his senior debut during the festive period, becoming Chesterfield’s second-youngest ever first-team player when he came off the bench in a League Two fixture at Fleetwood Town on Boxing Day. He was also listed as an unused substitute in the following match away at Bradford City, indicating that the coaching staff had already identified his potential at senior level.
Elliott continued to impress in the pre-season leading up to the 2025–26 campaign, featuring in first-team friendlies against both Burton Albion and Nottingham Forest. According to club sources, these performances contributed significantly to the decision to offer him professional terms.
Internationally, Elliott has represented Malta at both U17 and U21 levels. He earned his first two caps with the U21 national team in June 2025, playing in friendly matches against San Marino. Earlier that year, he had also been part of Malta’s provisional senior squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers, further underlining his rapid progression on the international stage.
The club said the timing of the contract, signed on his birthday, made the moment even more special for the young striker. Club representatives expressed confidence in his future, suggesting that Elliott would continue to train regularly with the first team and would likely be considered for matches in the EFL Trophy to gain further competitive experience.
Coaches within Chesterfield’s academy and first team have described Elliott as a hard-working and focused player, and they indicated their intention to support his transition into senior football with care and patience.
